The links between genes and alcoholism
The identification of genetic factors that make it vulnerable to dependence on alcohol could lead to the development of targeted therapies, helping people at risk to make more conscious choices for their lives.
The alcohol addiction is a disease complex and controversial, but the susceptibility to it follows clear patterns of inheritance. This indicates that some of the biological basis leading to increased vulnerability of alcohol are transmitted by genes.
Some physiological traits, such as certain forms of brain activity in alcoholics and their children, help scientists identify gene variations that affect the responses of the person alcohol.
Discovering genes that influence alcoholism and diseases related to it will bring the knowledge necessary to understand how the disease develops, and pave the way for better treatments, enabling those at risk
to take informed decisions about their health and on what to do.
